This “Trophy” belonged to Major-General Robert Clive of the prestigious East India Company as a showcase of his triumphant victory in the Battle of Plassey in 1757, following which he made a focal point from the foot of his adversary’s steed.
Following the overrun of Calcutta by Sirij ud-Daulah, Clive courageously took control of the company’s forces in a showman’s battle for the release of 156 of it’s men captured in Fort William, now commonly known as the Black Hole of Calcutta. The wealth Clive gained through this success then enabled him to acquire a range of exotic pets, which he later had preserved within his extravagant collection of 18th Century canes and umbrellas.
